NEXT "MEETING": Wednesday, November 18, 7:30 North Branch Reformed Church

Dear GOSV:

All of us being gardening enthusiasts in one form or another, did you ever wonder what it would have been like if somewhere along your personal journey you decided to become a landscape architect? Or for that matter basically taking a mulligan (do over) to pursue a vocation you truly love. Next week GOSV welcomes VP Lorrie Lindsay to talk about the life and passions of a horticultural student at Rutgers. Heady stuff especially since she made this choice much later in life than most. Lorrie plans to work on the program over the weekend, so the details will main a surprise until next Wednesday. For sure we’ll gain insight into the challenges and joys of working towards a career in landscape architecture and perhaps reflect upon our own past choices, and who knows even look at the future a little differently.

Recently Dottie Wright and several other GOSV members visited the Storm King Art Center near West Point experiencing 2500 acres of modern art and statues. They had such a good time that Dottie is planning a repeat visit in the spring and also a tour of the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens during the holidays, and she thinks these field trips in general should become a regular feature of the club. She will bring in a book about Storm King, briefly talk about this latest adventure, and explain her vision about future travel events starting with Brooklyn.

Though it seems like only a short while ago the meeting room was overflowing with plates of tomatoes, believe it or not the GOSV Christmas Party is only three weeks away. Mark your calendars and save December 5 for another great time at Christine’s and Craig’s. Details to follow in a future e-mail.

Please note that the original November program on bog gardening has been postponed until March. It’s been so dry lately, right before early spring seems like a more appropriate time for this topic.

Lorrie’s talk will certainly include interesting information about trends in landscape architecture. Don’t minimize the psychological value of watching our friend strive to reach her goal. See you all next week.

Mitch
