                        Gardeners of Somerset Valley
July 2013 From: Mitch Greenbaum

NEXT "MEETING": Wednesday, July 17, 7pm
at Marty's Garden

Dear GOSV:

On June 22, the weather spirits treated 12 of us (11 members including Lorri Lindsay and her friend) to a clear, sunny and low humidity day, perfect for exploring Rutgers Gardens with tour guide extraordinaire Bruce Crawford. Starting with a short stroll to the eerily spectacular bamboo forest, Bruce ferried us from garden to garden taking an unusual tact by mixing in plant evolution, historical anecdotes and most importantly sharing his vision for the future. It was truly a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning. in June.

Following the tour, most of us headed over to Lorri's home to have lunch and celebrate the end of the school year. Lorri also wanted to show her appreciation for the GOSV scholarship and renewal, and we ate, drank, gorged on desserts, met some of her classmates and even a faculty advisor. Her garden including multiple ponds with gargantuan koi expressed a unique horticultural talent, and was like an oasis in an almost urban setting. Lorri is proving to be a one of a kind scholarship winner and we can't thank you enough for your hospitality and friendship.

The same day as Marty's garden tour/party, The Friends of Frelinghuysen Arboretum and 'Dig It' are teaming up for a tour and luncheon at Chanticleer, one of the most beautiful gardens on the east coast. If interested and to find out seat availability, check

Marty probably because of her Dutch heritage, has made a garden that's perfect for strolling, meditating and doing something many humans have forgotten, conversing with friends with no electronic gadgets, no agenda and no schedule. Towards the end of this week, a front is coming through with cooler temperatures. Keep your fingers crossed, just once we may get a temperate evening so the joy of Marty's place won't be accompanied with sweat pouring down faces and spines. Marty will supply snacks and adult beverages, guests are welcome to bring there favorite bottle of wine or foods too.

Hope to see everyone next week.
