Show me a baby boomer who didnít dream of joining the Peace Corps and ďIíll eat my hatĒ, to coin an old expression. The decades of the 1960ís and 70ís was a particularly idealistic time in our countryís history, and the Peace Corps founded in 1961 under the John F Kennedy administration seemed to be the perfect avenue for expressing patriotism and volunteerism. For most, careers and family responsibilities eventually got in the way, in other instances there were those like GOSVís Marie Stainkin who took the plunge and enlisted for a 2 year stint right after college. Her destination was Yap (requires a Google search); a very small island in the Western Pacific and part of Micronesia, her job was to serve as a speech teacher. The idea of the Peace Corps was to immerse oneself in the community, train leaders, and allow the different cultures to better understand each other. Itís usually a life changing experience and next week let baby boomers and other generations alike live vicariously as Marie shares her long-ago adventure.
After taking the month of January off, there is some important business on the docket.
This year, everyone is encouraged to make a commitment to promote GOSV amongst family, friends and co-workers, even strangers you run into at garden centers or community gardens etc. The world has changed dramatically, the popularity of joining clubs has gone by the wayside and like most organizations this one has seen a significant decline in membership. The goal is for each of us to entice one new prospect. Over the years the board has tried newspaper ads, promotions at flower shows, hanging flyers, none seem to work. Historically word of mouth has proven to be the most successful marketing tool. For any member particular talented with PowerPoint, developing a flyer for members to hand out throughout lifeís travels could support the recruiting effort. Please step forward and let an officer know of your interest, itís so critical to bring on new and motivated members.
Letís hope Marieís talk will bring on a wave of altruism starting with GOSV- sell flowers, find members, and volunteer for a position- see you all next week.
